Tour description

One of the most important archaeological museums in the world as regards Roman art, thanks above all to the artifacts found in Pompeii and Herculaneum. We will be able to admire the various collections inside, the Farnese one, linked to Paolo Farnese (Pope Paul III) who encouraged the excavations at the baths of Caracalla, from which majestic sculptures emerged, the “toro Farnese”, the Ercole Farnese

The Mosaics, one of the most spectacular collections of Mann, we will appreciate the different pieces from Pompeii and Herculaneum that decorate the different rooms. The most famous of them shows the Battle by Issus, a mosaic that consists of more than two million small marble tesserae and is therefore an example of the “Opus vermiculatum” mosaic technique.

We will then enter the ”Gabinetto Segreto” (Secret Cabinet) where finds depicting erotic motifs quite explicitly can be found. Considered obscene by descendants, this collection suffered various blows of fate; for a long time, this part of the museum was even closed and was finally reopened to the public in 2000. The frescoes are excellent examples of the development of Pompeian painting between the 1st century B.C. and the 1st century AD. We will get the chance to admire architectural and perspective fantasies, ornamental decorations, “still lifes” and famous mythological stories told through paintings.

Finally, we will visit the section where the finds of the ”Villa dei Papiri” are kept, a villa that belonged to people of the Roman aristocracy and that has been rebuilt in the Getty Museum of Malibu.

The Museum Tour could be completed by a walk through the most typical neighborhoods of Naples to admire and appreciate the thousand colors of this beautiful city.

On the way, we could try the famous Neapolitan street food.
