After a brief explanation of the origins of Naples and the facade of the Duomo, let’s discover the interior. We will start with the chapel Cappella di Santa Restituta and will then immediately find ourselves at the baptistery Battistero San Giovanni in Fonte, which is considered to be the oldest early Christian baptistery in the Western world. The vault is still covered with magnificent mosaics from the 5th century.
We will continue our visit at the cappella del Succorpo chapel, also called cappella Carafa or Crypt of San Gennaro: here you can see the urn, which the Relics of the Patron Saint of Naples are kept in.
On the last stop in the Duomo, we will admire the Cappella del tesoro di San Gennaro (Treasury Chapel of San Gennaro), one of the 3 baroque gems of the city of Naples, as well as a small but wonderful picture gallery with works of art by important artists of the 17th century, Ribeira, Domenichino, Lanfranco...
We leave the sacred part and enter the “mundane” one. Amidst sounds and colors, we will head towards Decumanus Maximus, the main street of Greek-Roman Neapolis. After a brief stop to enjoy the sight of the famous Neapolitan fritter, our last stop will be in one of the main little streets of the city, via San Gregorio Armeno ( the Crib Street). For the Neapolitans, Christmas simply isn’t Christmas without a Crib: every family sets up a crib in their home. We will admire these real works of art in a store and discover all their secrets.
